Lucknow, Sep 16 (SocialNews.XYZ) Amid the Centre's decision to introduce a 0.4 per cent UPI charge on certain merchant transactions above Rs 2,000, Uttar Pradesh Minister Sanjay Nishad on Wednesday said such charges should not be increased as they could add to the burden on consumers.
India's Unified Payments Interface (UPI) services will attract a fractional charge on merchant transactions above Rs 2,000, while person-to-person payments will remain outside the new framework.
The new UPI Merchant Discount Rate (MDR) framework will come into effect from October 15. According to the new rules issued by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), a 0.4 per cent charge will apply to eligible transactions made by consumers to merchants.
Speaking to reporters, Nishad said, “Today, there are international issues, whether related to inflation or anything else. We feel that such charges should not be increased. Under what circumstances has it been increased? Since it affects customers and the public. Today, there is democracy in the world. Democracy always means reducing the burden, providing opportunities and facilities, and ensuring that people do not face any kind of hardship. Rather, democracy is the name of medicine for hardship.”
Reacting to the Uttar Pradesh Cabinet's decision to convert 14,429 primary schools into smart schools at a cost of Rs 300 crore, Nishad said the initiative should ensure that children from economically weaker sections also benefit.
“British were smart. They made the rich smart, but how will the poor become smart? Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya’s thinking was that even the person at the bottom of the social ladder should get the opportunity for development. So, a child born into a poor family should also study in a smart classroom, become smart and move forward,” he said.
Nishad also commented on Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav becoming president of the Lohia Trust.
“The name of the trust itself is ‘Nyas’, and ‘Nyas’ means trust. If you do not have trust in your own blood relations, then what will you do with others? Politics is also another form of trust. In politics, people place their trust in a leader, their party, their constituency and all their people. So, if there is a lack of trust at the top, when you do not even trust your own blood relations, what will you do with others?” he said.
On Yadav's remarks concerning the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), Nishad said, “The kind of advisers he has is the reason he is out of power today. The Constitution always talks about social justice. Social justice will be achieved only when there is a Uniform Civil Code and equal rights. Rights are given through laws, Acts and notifications.”
